Themes , Symbols and Motifs

Themes
           Symbols
                      and Motifs
                                     in FAHRENHEIT 451
THEME:
  • Censorship
Censorship is one of the most important themes that can be found in Fahrenheit 451,
The society in which Guy Montag is living doesn´t think independently and do not show interest in improving their knowledge by reading books, instead of this they watch a T,V family and consider it their own family. Also people doesn´t appreciate their surroundings and only think in their own benefit.

All this ignorance of the people is thanks to the censorship the government is using. For example some books were banned because they weren´t politically correct, and not only this if only ONE person doesn´t like a book it will be burnt or banned, Society in this book is afraid of being independent so they relly on their own government to think for them.

The programmes that were shown in the televison provided mindless entertainment, which shows that the government didn´t want people to go beyond what they were shown.Because of this the society follows all the decisions the government takes, and follow them " blindly"

"Colored people dont like Little Black Sambo, Burn it. White people don't feel good about Uncle Tom's Cabin. Burn it. Someone's written a book on

tobacco and cancer of the lungs? The cigarette people are weeping? Burn the
book. Serenity Montag. Peace Montag"

BIG 5 IMAGE ANALYSIS

  1. AUDIENCE/ PURPOSE : Through this image the author wants to show that censorship is not only of speech but also it makes individuals of a society blind to what is really happening. This may be targetted to the people who feel their government or any company is oppressing their way of thinking.
  2. CONTENT/ THEME : In this image you can see a man whose eyes and mouth are covered by some hands, and in the sleeves of those hands can be seen some words or news that are censoring the individual.
  3. TONE/ MOOD: This image makes you feel sad because the person isnt getting the freedom he deserves to say what he thinks of what he sees, since he is not let to talk or to watch what is really going on around him. This creates an insecure atmosphere because he will always have fear of expressing his own thoughts.
  4. STYLISTIC DEVICES : In this image the colors black and white are used to show to the viewer  the sadness of living under censorship, in which you can´t even see the colors you want, all is black and white.
  5. STRUCTURE: It is hand-drawn image, with only black and white colors.

SYMBOL:

  • The Phoenix
After the city was bombarded Granger compares man to a phoenix that burns itself up and then rises out of it ashes over and over again. This means that the advantage of men is recognizing   when he has made a mistake, eventually he  learns not to make that mistake anymore.  The symbol of the phoenix’s rebirth also refers to Montag’s spiritual resurrection.

BIG 5 IMAGE ANALYSIS

  1. AUDIENCE/ PURPOSE : In this image the purpose of the author is to give optimism to the people by drawing a bird rising up from his own ashes.
  2. CONTENT/ THEME : A bird is rising up fom his own ashes in form of fire to fly towards his destiny.
  3. TONE/ MOOD: It gives you hope, optimism and joy because it shows that through had work you can accomplish your own goals by yourself.
  4. STYLISTIC DEVICES :In this image is used orange to represent fire, gray to represent the ashes and this two elements are highlighted so they draw all the attention of the image.
  5. STRUCTURE: It uses fire, ashes, a bird flying towards the sky and it seems that the photo was made by computer.
MOTIFS:

  • Nature and Animal Imagery
In the novel nature represents innocence and truth, this can be seen with Clarisse's love for nature and also when Montag after he escapes the city he realizes the enlightening power of unspoiled nature.
The Animal Imagery present in the novel is mostly ironic, since although Montag's society loves technology they develop many devices based on the nature , for example the mechanical hound and the Electric.eyed snake.

"The Sieve and the Sand" FIGURES OF SPEECH ! :)

In the second part of the book  FAHRENHEIT 451("The Sieve and the Sand") written by Ray Bradbury, many Literary Devices can be found all throughout the chapter.

For example :

1. Personification

“"And the smell of blue electricity blowing under the locked door“ Page 68

This is a personification because the author is telling that the electricity can blow and smell, which are human characteristics.
This makes me feel suspense and cold because of the words blue, blowing and under the locked door.

2. Oxymoron

“It was dead but it was alive. It could see but it couldn’t see“ Page 69

This is an oxymoron because the author is using two contradictory terms together in order to confuse the reader. (Dead-alive) (See-couldn’t see)

This makes me feel scared and curious because I basically don’t know anything about what or who is outside the house.

3. Hyperbole

“The subway fled past him“ Page 74

This is a hyperbole because since the train is going really fast, the author is exaggerating by saying it is flying.

This makes me feel suffocation and adrenaline, because I feel like the train is going so fast that I have to catch up with it.

4.Repetition

                                 “Cream-tile, Jet-black, Cream-tile, Jet-black“ Page 74

This is a repetition because the author is trying to make something clear to us so he repeats the same phrases.

This makes me feel clarified, because I understand and can see better what the author meant which I think is the color of the subway.

5.Alliteration

“Denham’s Dentifrice, Denham’s Dandy Dental Detergent, Denham’s Dentifrice Dentifrice Dentifrice“ Page 75

This is alliteration because the beginning sound of these words is the same throughout the whole sentence.

This makes me feel confused and stressed because there is no sense in this sentence and it is also hard to read and write this without getting confused.

6. Simile

“He’s a regular peppermint stick now, all sugar-crystal and saccharine“

This is a simile because the author is comparing a person with a peppermint stick in order to show the personality of this person.

This makes me feel good because I am being told that this person is nice so I kind of start liking him.
